The carousel stops and your bag is nowhere in sight. First move is to go straight to the baggage service desk in the arrivals hall before you leave the secure area. Have your baggage tag and boarding pass ready. Staff will open a Property Irregularity Report and give you a reference number. Write that number down or take a photo of the form, you will need it for every later step.
Most airlines let you track the bag online once the report is in the system. Enter the reference number on their baggage tracing page and check it once or twice a day. Bags often reappear within twenty-four to forty-eight hours on the next incoming flight. If nothing shows after three days start calling the baggage desk at the airport where you landed and also the central tracing office of the airline.
While you wait you can claim reasonable interim expenses. Keep every receipt for clothes, toiletries or essential items you had to buy because the bag was missing. Many carriers reimburse a daily amount up to a set limit, but only if you submit the receipts with the reference number. Do this within the first week, later claims get slower.
If the bag is still missing after twenty-one days it is usually declared lost. At that point you can file for full compensation based on the weight of the bag or a declared value if you paid for extra coverage. The form is normally available on the airline website under delayed or lost baggage claims. Attach the original Property Irregularity Report, boarding pass, baggage tag and a list of contents with approximate values. Photos of the items help but are not always required.
One detail people forget is to check whether any valuable or fragile items were inside. Standard liability is limited and some things are excluded unless you declared them in advance. Also note the deadline for the final claim, it is often measured in days from the moment the bag was declared lost, not from the flight date.
Once the claim is submitted keep the confirmation email and follow up if you hear nothing after two weeks. Most cases get resolved with either the bag delivered to your address or a payment to the original card. Stay patient but persistent, the reference number is the only thing that keeps the process moving.
