The confirmation email looks straightforward until you reach the airport and discover the terminal or operating airline is different from what you expected. Most surprises come from three details that sit quietly on the itinerary: the terminal, the operating carrier and the final gate information.
Terminal numbers are listed next to each flight but they can change after you book. Always check the live airport website or the airline app on the day of travel rather than relying only on the original email. Some airports have terminals that are far apart and moving between them can take forty minutes or more, especially if you have checked bags to collect and recheck.
Operating carrier is another common trap. The flight may be sold by one airline yet operated by a partner. The code on the ticket shows the marketing airline, while a smaller line of text names the actual carrier that will fly the plane. This matters for check-in desks, baggage rules and which app will give you the most accurate gate updates. If the two names differ, follow the operating carrier for day-of-travel information.
Gate numbers almost never appear on the original itinerary. They are assigned a few hours before departure and can still change after boarding has started. The only reliable sources are the airport screens and the airline app once you are inside the terminal. Screenshots of the booking confirmation will not help at this stage.
A quick habit that prevents most last-minute problems is to open the full itinerary details rather than the summary view. Look for any notes about shared flights, terminal transfers or special check-in locations. These remarks are easy to scroll past yet they explain why the experience at the airport feels different from the simple plan you had in mind.
Taking five minutes to decode these three points before you leave for the airport removes the majority of common surprises. The information is already on the page, it just needs a slower second look.
